We prove that every piecewise linear manifold of dimension up to four on which a finite group acts by piecewise linear homeomorphisms admits a compatible smooth structure with respect to which the group acts smoothly. This solves a challenge posed by Thurston in dimension three and confirms a conjecture by Kwasik and Lee in dimension four in a stronger form.

We show that the geodesic period spectrum of a Riemannian 2-orbifold all of whose geodesics are closed depends, up to a constant, only on its orbifold topology and compute it. In the manifold case we recover the fact proved by Gromoll, Grove and Pries that all prime geodesics have the same length. In the appendix we partly strengthen our result in terms of conjugacy of contact forms and explain how to deduce rigidity on the real projective plane based on a systolic inequality due to Pu. (We do...

We classify the Seifert fibrations of any given lens space L(p,q). We give an algorithmic construction of a Seifert fibration of L(p,q) over the base orbifold S^2(m,n) with the coprime parts of m and n arbitrarily prescribed. This algorithm produces all possible Seifert fibrations, and the equivalences between the resulting Seifert fibrations are described completely. Also, we show that all Seifert fibrations are equivalent to certain standard models.

Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g \geq 2 over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p > 0. Let M_X be the moduli space of semistable rank-2 vector bundles over X with trivial determinant. The relative Frobenius map F: X \to X_1 induces by pull-back a rational map V: M_{X_1} \to M_{X}. In this paper we show the following results. 1) For any line bundle L over X, the rank-p vector bundle F_*L is stable. 2) The rational map V has base points, i.e., there exist stable...

Let $\pi: Z \ra X$ be a Galois covering of smooth projective curves with Galois group the Weyl group of a simple and simply-connected Lie group $G$. For any dominant weight $\lambda$ consider the curve $Y = Z/\Stab(\lambda)$. The Kanev correspondence defines an abelian subvariety $P_\lambda$ of the Jacobian of $Y$. We compute the type of the polarization of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $\Jac(Y)$ to $P_\lambda$ in some cases. In particular, in the case of the group...

We survey the existing parts of a classification of finite groups generated by orthogonal transformations in a finite-dimensional Euclidean space whose fixed point subspace has codimension one or two and extend it to a complete classification. These groups naturally arise in the study of the quotient of a Euclidean space by a finite orthogonal group and hence in the theory of orbifolds.

The theorem that if all geodesics of a Riemannian two-sphere are closed they are also simple closed is generalized to real Hamiltonian structures on $\mathbb{R}P^3$. For reversible Finsler $2$-spheres all of whose geodesics are closed this implies that the lengths of all geodesics coincide.

The production of vector bosons in association with jets contains at least two unrelated scales. The first is the mass of the vector boson m_V and the second is the hard interaction scale giving rise to large transverse momenta of the produced jets. The production cross sections depend logarithmically on the ratio of these scales, which can lead to a poor convergence in fixed order perturbation theory. We illustrate how to resum all leading logarithmic terms using effective theory methods, and...

The Sonneberg Sky Patrol archive so far has not yet been analyzed systematically. In this paper we present first steps towards an automated photometric analysis aiming at the search for variable stars and transient phenomena like novae. Early works on the sky patrol plates showed that photometric accuracy can be enhanced with fitting algorithms. The procedure used was a manually supported click-and-fit-routine, not suitable for automatic analysis of vast amount of photographic plates. We will...

The growth of N,N'-dimethylperylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (DiMe-PTCDI) on KBr(001) and NaCl(001) surfaces has been studied. Experimental results have been achieved using frequency modulation atomic force microscopy at room temperature under ultra-high vacuum conditions. On both substrates, DiMe-PTCDI forms molecular wires with a width of 10 nm, typically, and a length of up to 600 nm at low coverages. All wires grow along the [110] direction (or [1$\bar{1}$0] direction, respectively) of...

Using a highly viscous magnetic fluid, the dynamics in the aftermath of the Rosensweig instability can be slowed down by more than 2000 times. In this way we expand the regime where the growth rate is predicted to scale linearly with the bifurcation parameter by six orders of magnitude, while this regime is tiny for standard ferrofluids and can not be resolved experimentally there. We measure the growth of the pattern by means of a two-dimensional imaging technique, and find that the slopes of...

Abstract Pulmonary hypertension (PH) often leads to dilatation of the pulmonary artery (PA), which can be measured on chest computed tomography (CT). While the predictive capability of PA dilatation is useful to distinguish PH (mean PA pressure ≥25 mmHg) from normal (mean PA pressure ≤ 20 mmHg), CT characteristics of borderline PH (mean PA pressure 21-24 mmHg) have not been described.
